Fairchild Honors National POW/MIA Recognition Day with 24-hour Ruck March
"A table in memory of U.S. military prisoners of war and those missing in action stands on display during a National POW/MIA Recognition Day event at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, Sept. 20, 2024. Airmen assigned to FAFB completed a 24-hour ruck march in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The march began at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Riverfront Park and ended at Fairchild AFB with participants keeping the POW/MIA flag in constant motion for 24 hours.
Every year, the third Friday in September is recognized in the United States as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. This past Friday, in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, the people of Tappahannock, VA held a wonderful Recognition Day ceremony at the main square, which our very own archival specialist, Aaron Ahlstrom, drove over to attend & speak about the League's accounting mission!
January to March of 2024 - DPAA Investigated a Possible Vietnam War era plane crash site in Cambodia
From January to March of this year, Ohio Valley Archaeology Inc (OVAI), a partner of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), investigated a possible Vietnam War era plane crash site in Cambodia with the goal of recovering American servicemen still unaccounted for from that that incident. DPAA senior leaders and civilian employees host a tour for Senior Lt. Gen. Vo Minh Luong, Deputy Minister of National Defense Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Aug. 6, 2024. The visit included a signing of the visitor’s logbook, laboratory tour, and a gift exchange between key leaders.
NOTE: DPAA has assured not only the League, but the American people, that their operational priority is on VIETNAM WAR accounting efforts.

DPAA Conducts Honorable Carry Ceremony - July 28th, 2024
U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Connor Dougherty, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, transfers potential osseous material during an honorable carry at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, July 28, 2024. The cases were transferred to DPAA laboratories for scientific analysis and possible identification.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration & DPAA Agree to Share Ocean Exploration Data
"The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) have signed a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) to share data and scientific information, and collaborate on ocean exploration work that contributes to the missions of both federal agencies." World War II Veteran Accounted for - 8/2/24
U.S. Army Technician Fifth Grade (Tech5) Harold D. Pittis, 21, of Freeport, Ohio, killed during World War II, was announced as being accounted for today by DPAA. "In February 1945, Pittis was assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division. His regiment was engaged in fierce fighting near the town of Biesdorf, Germany, when he was reported killed in action by small arms fire on Feb. 8. His body was unable to be recovered due to intense fighting against heavily reinforced German forces on an elevated position. Despite various recovery attempts, Pittis’s remains were not accounted for during or after the war."

DPAA Weekly Update - 7/22/24
"U.S. service members with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) drape a U.S. flag over a casket during a disinterment ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, July 15, 2024. The United States suffered approximately 36,500 casualties during the Korean War, making up over 90% of non-Korean UN losses."
FOR CLARIFICATION - The families of these American heroes did NOT suffer uncertainty all these years, as they were known dead from the time of loss. The National League of POW/MIA Families fully supports these efforts, providing DPAA honors its pledge to continue to put "highest operational priority" on Vietnam War accounting efforts, including answers for the impacted families when remains are not recoverable.
